dSLRs have been very affordable in recent years, any many people are jumping into getting one. Here are some of my favorites dSLR for beginners.

dSLR Body

Entry-level

Canon EOS Rebel XSi
ISO up to 1600, No video.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i
ISO up to 12800, 1080p HD video capable

Canon EOS Rebel T2i
ISO up to 12800, 1080p HD video capable. Higher video fps compared to T1i)

Nikon D5000
No autofocus in movie mode. No dedicated buttons for White balance, ISO, etc.

All above are good camera, choose one which suits your needs and budget. Nikon D5000 is a good camera for casual users but ideal not for advanced users who wants to play with camera settings. I would pick a Canon EOS Rebel if you are interested in photography.

Mid-range

Canon EOS 50D
No video, faster burst shot compared to D90, Heavier, more durable.

Nikon D90
720p video recording. Smaller & lighter than 50D

For those interested in photography and have the budget to stretch, this two are good cameras.

Learn how to make star trails! Since there is a lot of light pollution where I live right now, I cannot do a single exposure star trails. I will have to do multiple shots and merge them together using software.

This is one of the method you can use if you live in places with light pollution.

You will need:

dSLR

Tripod

Remote Switch

Startrails software – http://www.startrails.de/html/software.html

My Setup/Settings:

Stable Tripod

Mode: M- Manual

Focus: Manual Focus

Drive Mode: High Speed Continuous

White Balance: Daylight

Quality: JPEG
Avoid using RAW as it takes too much space and my slow down the camera burst shot. Star trails software might not support RAW.

Aperture: f/8.0 or larger

Shutter Speed: 20s – 30s

ISO: Lowest Possible

Image Stabilizer: Off

Lens: Wide Angle

Additional Notes:

I used high ISO (1600) to check if there is any object (power lines, trees) obstructing the view of my camera.

I did some test shots to make sure the exposure is correct.

Make sure the sky is clear, weather is good.

Since the camera’s longest shutter without a timer is 30s, I adjusted the aperture to largest possible first, then only adjust the ISO to capture as much stars as possible.

f/3.5 25s ISO-200

322 files stacked together. 134 minutes of stacked images.
Notice the light pollution at the bottom of the photo?
