Step 1

Install UBVPN or go to http://ubvpn.buffalo.edu/

Step 2

Launch Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client & Login using your UBITName and password. Connect to ubvpn.buffalo.edu.

Click Accept.

Step 3

If you have not installed any printer, continue from Step 2 in http://blog.zynine.com/2010/04/ub-iprint-anywhere/

Step 4

Once setup, you are ready to print to selected printer/sites.

Note: You will have to release your printouts from the Release Station.

Step 1

Go to My Computer. Click Map network drive.

Step 2

Drive: Select anything you want.

Folder: https://ubfs-mac.buffalo.edu/ubfs/myfiles/[first letter of UBITName]/[second letter of UBITName]/[UBITName]

Example

Check Connect using different credentials.

Step 3

A Windows Security window will popup. Include ad\ in the before your username.

Check remember my credentials. Click OK.

Step 4

You are ready to access your UBFS drive.

All above are good camera, choose one which suits your needs and budget. Nikon D5000 is a good camera for casual users but ideal not for advanced users who wants to play with camera settings. I would pick a Canon EOS Rebel if you are interested in photography.

  No video, faster burst shot compared to D90, Heavier, more durable.
• Nikon D90
  720p video recording. Smaller & lighter than 50D

For those interested in photography and have the budget to stretch, this two are good cameras.

This is one of the method you can use if you live in places with light pollution.

You will need:

• Focus: Manual Focus
• Drive Mode: High Speed Continuous
• White Balance: Daylight
• Quality: JPEG
  Avoid using RAW as it takes too much space and my slow down the camera burst shot. Star trails software might not support RAW.
• Aperture: f/8.0 or larger
• Shutter Speed: 20s – 30s
• ISO: Lowest Possible
• Image Stabilizer: Off
• Lens: Wide Angle

Additional Notes:

• I used high ISO (1600) to check if there is any object (power lines, trees) obstructing the view of my camera.
• I did some test shots to make sure the exposure is correct.
• Make sure the sky is clear, weather is good.
• Since the camera’s longest shutter without a timer is 30s, I adjusted the aperture to largest possible first, then only adjust the ISO to capture as much stars as possible.

Did you know that it is possible to print to University at Buffalo public cites printers from you laptop via wireless connection? Read this article to learn how.

Steps below were tested on Windows 7 x64 edition.

Step 1

Make sure your are connected to UB_Secure wireless connection.

Make sure you select Home Network or Work Network instead of Public Network.

Step 2

Press the Windows Key + R to bring up the Windows Run Commands window.

Type in \\iprint.buffalo.edu\ and click OK.

Step 3

A Windows Security window will popup informing you about a login failure. Key in your UBIT Username and Password in the format shown below.

Please remember to include ad\ before your username. You can tick Remember my credentials so you do not have to reenter the information again.

Step 4

You will see a list of network printers below. Right click and click Connect to the desired printer.

Here’s a list of the official printer names and locations.

Step 5

If Do you trust this printer? dialog appears go to Step 5A

If a No driver found dialog appears, go to Step 5B.

Step 5A

A dialog bog will popup informing you that you will need to download and install drivers. Click Install driver.

It may take a few minutes for the driver to be downloaded & installed.

Step 5B

If a No driver found dialog appears, you will have to download the appropriate drivers.

Eg. Lockwood printer on Windows 7 x64.

For Windows XP/Vista/7 x64, Download the Windows Vista x64 Postscript driver.

Double click the downloaded file to extract the driver to desired location.

In this case C:\HP LJ40x0 PostScript Driver

Go back to the No driver found dialog. Click OK.

Browse to the folder of the extracted PostScript driver. Click OK

Once done correctly, this dialog should appear.

Step 6

You are ready to print stuffs to selected printers, the only drawback is you need to release the printouts from a Cybrary Station or Release Station.

If you would like to add more printers, repeat the steps above. You may not need to login or install new drivers depending on which printer.

Go to Manage Wireless Networks

Select Manually create a network profile

Network name: UB_Secure
Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
Encryption type: AES

Click Change connection settings

Select Security tab

Choose a network authentication method: Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)

Click Settings beside PEAP.

Check Validate server certification

Check Entrust.net Secure  Certification Authority

Click Configure beside Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)

Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)

Click OK Click OK Click OK.

When you try to connect to UB_Secure, this should pop up. Enter your UBIT Username & Password.

Go to http://ubit.buffalo.edu/ubwireless/index.php for other devices.
