Fuel/Gas

Always check your Owner’s Manual.

Remove fuel cap.

Fuel up your gas tank.

Stop topping up when the fuel pump clicks (Gas can expand!)

Tighten the fuel cap until it clicks.

If you car uses gas with octane number 87 or higher, just stick to 87. You won’t gain additional performance or benefits with 91/93 octane gas. You might shorten your engine if you use higher term usual octane on a long-term period.

If you car uses premium, you can run regular but with decrease in power.

Higher octane fuel does not mean higher quality!

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is important. Follow the maintenance schedule.

Follow SEVERE maintenance schedule if you drive under one or more of the following conditions:

You drive short trips (5miles/trip)

Driving in hot temperatures.

Extensive stop/go.

Driving in mountain roads.

Engine Oil

The most important and frequently changed fluid in the car. Change every 3-10K depending on fluid and driving condition.

Check engine oil level frequently. Normal practice is usually at every fuel top up and when the engine is warm. Make sure it stays between the level. Top it up if it goes below the line.

If you have to top it up frequently, there is a leak somewhere.

Engine Oil Filter

Change every 2 engine oil change.

Coolant

Another important fluid in the car. Check frequently. Make sure the fluid does not go below LOW level in cold weather. If you have to top it up frequently, there is a leak somewhere.

Transmission Fluid

Usually changed around 60k for severe condition. Fluid change is very important for automatic transmission cars.

Timing Belt

Very important belt. Always get it inspected when you repair your car. Usually changed 60-100K depending on car model. If it breaks, it will be a very expensive repair for most cars (interference engine).

Appearance Care

Wash your car with product made for car washing.

Waxing is always good for a car.

Touch-up any chips or scratches to prevent corrosion/rust.

Check Engine Light

Check engine light means there is a problem somewhere.

If you refueled your car recently, check the fuel fill cap to make sure it is tight. A tight fuel cap will click several times when turned.

If check engine light stays on, get an experience friend get a OBDII reader to check what Codes your car is throwing. OR go to a mechanic if you have money.

Jump starting

Check to make sure the fluid of the battery is not frozen/slushy. (Battery can explode if you try to jump start a frozen/slushy battery)

Turn off all electrical accessories (heater, a/c, stereo, lights)

Put transmission in neutral/park. Set the parking brakes.

Connect + to dead battery (Car 1).

Connect + to good battery (Car 2).

Connect – to good battery (Car 2).

Connect – to ground (Car 1). (To prevent fire incase there is spark!)

Start up Car 2 at high idle. (Low idle = lower voltage)

Start up Car 1.

Disconnect – from dead battery (Car 2).

Disconnect – from good battery (Car 1).

Disconnect + from both batteries.

Changing flat tire

Park the car on a firm/hard and level ground. (you don’t want your jack to sink into the ground or your vehicle falls off the jack)

Put transmission in Park (auto) or Reverse (manual). Set the parking brakes. (Same warning as above)

Turn off the engine.

Remove jack and spare tire.

Loosen the all the lug nuts. (You can’t loosen when the wheel is off the ground, the wheel will spin)

Jack up the car at the jack points until flat tire is off the ground.

Remove wheel and place it facing up on the floor.

Put on the spare tire and finger tighten the lug nuts in crisscross pattern.

Lower the car and remove the jack.

Tighten the lug nuts in crisscross pattern. (Crisscross pattern is used so that the wheel is centered properly)

If using a compact spare tire, drive slow and get your flat tire repaired.

dSLRs have been very affordable in recent years, any many people are jumping into getting one. Here are some of my favorites dSLR for beginners.

dSLR Body

Entry-level

Canon EOS Rebel XSi
ISO up to 1600, No video.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i
ISO up to 12800, 1080p HD video capable

Canon EOS Rebel T2i
ISO up to 12800, 1080p HD video capable. Higher video fps compared to T1i)

Nikon D5000
No autofocus in movie mode. No dedicated buttons for White balance, ISO, etc.

All above are good camera, choose one which suits your needs and budget. Nikon D5000 is a good camera for casual users but ideal not for advanced users who wants to play with camera settings. I would pick a Canon EOS Rebel if you are interested in photography.

Mid-range

Canon EOS 50D
No video, faster burst shot compared to D90, Heavier, more durable.

Nikon D90
720p video recording. Smaller & lighter than 50D

For those interested in photography and have the budget to stretch, this two are good cameras.

Basic dSLR Guide: Star Trails – Stacked Multiple Images Method

Learn how to make star trails! Since there is a lot of light pollution where I live right now, I cannot do a single exposure star trails. I will have to do multiple shots and merge them together using software.

This is one of the method you can use if you live in places with light pollution.

You will need:

dSLR

Tripod

Remote Switch

Startrails software – http://www.startrails.de/html/software.html

My Setup/Settings:

Stable Tripod

Mode: M- Manual

Focus: Manual Focus

Drive Mode: High Speed Continuous

White Balance: Daylight

Quality: JPEG
Avoid using RAW as it takes too much space and my slow down the camera burst shot. Star trails software might not support RAW.

Aperture: f/8.0 or larger

Shutter Speed: 20s – 30s

ISO: Lowest Possible

Image Stabilizer: Off

Lens: Wide Angle

Additional Notes:

I used high ISO (1600) to check if there is any object (power lines, trees) obstructing the view of my camera.

I did some test shots to make sure the exposure is correct.

Make sure the sky is clear, weather is good.

Since the camera’s longest shutter without a timer is 30s, I adjusted the aperture to largest possible first, then only adjust the ISO to capture as much stars as possible.

f/3.5 25s ISO-200

322 files stacked together. 134 minutes of stacked images.
Notice the light pollution at the bottom of the photo?
