Â

I have always been using Windows Live Writer (WLW) to post into WordPress blogs. Today I shall compare the Microsoft Word 2007 and Windows Live Writer. This comparison is done on a self-hosted WordPress platform.

Price

Windows Live Writer
FREE!

Microsoft Word 2007
Standalone Microsoft Word 2007 cost $229. For home user and students, it cost $149.95 for Office Home and Student 2007.

Blogging Platform Support

Windows Live Writer
Windows Live Spaces, SharePoint blog, Blogger, Live Journal, WordPress, TypePad & more!

Microsoft Word 2007
Windows Live Spaces, SharePoint blog, Blogger, Community Server, WordPress, TypePad, Atom, MetaWebLog API

Post Writing

Windows Live Writer
The strong side of Live Writer is the “Edit using blog theme” feature which allows you to instantly preview your blog formatting. The problem is sometimes certain blog themes do not work properly.

Microsoft Word 2007
Word has better text formatting capabilities and table formatting than Live Writer. While it has the ability to assign categories, it lacks the ability to “split post” and assign “tags”.

Previous Post Editing

Windows Live Writer
Windows Live Writer is capable of opening the last 500 post.

Microsoft Word 2007
Word only listed the last 20 post in the blog. I am not sure if this is a limitation with Word 2007.

Plug-ins

Windows Live Writer
Live Writer has a wide variety of plug-ins, like map, video, Flickr upload plug-ins.

Microsoft Word 2007
I don’t think there is any?

Image Editing & Formatting

Windows Live Writer
Live Writer has pretty good image formatting capabilities. It allows you to define image link to source picture, URL or nothing. You can define the source picture size and borders. Under advanced, you can define the thumbnail size, rotate the image, adjust the contrast, crop, tilt and apply text watermark. You can add effects like Black and White, Sepia Tone, Adjust Temperature, Color Pop, Sharpen, Gaussian Blur and Emboss.

Microsoft Word 2007
Word 2007 offer more image borders and effects. What it lacks is ability to define the image link to source picture. It lacks watermark ability too.

Others

Windows Live Writer
Most of the features have been mentioned above. The main advantage is the custom plug-ins Live Writer has.

Microsoft Word 2007
The main advantage of Word 2007 is the ability to integrate office illustrations and charts.
